A Classical Music Poll

Posted by WritersBlock Sep. 18, 2008 @ 10:58 PM EDT

For those of you who are familiar with me and my music, I like to branch out and try my hand at many different styles. Right now, I'm very much in a classical mood. And I've got time on my hands.
I feel the need to create some classical music before this mood disappears into nothingness.
Now, I thought I'd have a little poll, to see what people would like to hear from me.
Would you like to hear:
a) A piano solo, fast paced and agressive and insanely complicated, or-
b) A piano solo, slow and delicate and beautiful, or-
c) An orchestral composition, an epic soundtrack type song, or-
d) An orchestral composition, that's not so epic, but has a certain finesse about it.

It's up to you, tell me what you'd like to hear me attempt and fail horribly at (lol), or suggest something that isn't one of the above 4.

Go go go go go!

Definitely Option C

Sep. 18, 2008 | 11:14 PM WritersBlock responds:

Yeah, people love epic orchestras. It should be a challenge, but rewarding if I could pull it off.

Sep. 18, 2008 | 11:28 PM MaestroRage says:

i'd actually like B. There are not enough truly beautiful piano pieces in this portal. If not B, then yeah, C :D!

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:03 AM WritersBlock responds:

I prefer songs like B, I really learned a lot from playing pieces that didn't require a lot of technical ability, but required a lot of feeling. The last song I learned in my studies was "Affinity" by an Australian composer called Stuart Greenbaum. It was very spacious and odd, and I learned to play this unusual piece, and bring out the feeling of the piece, and I loved it. I also learned a few small piano solos by Peter Sculthorpe. Now that guy is crazy. Very contemporary stuff, yet it doesn't sound like random jibberish, if you know what I mean. So I'm all about that style, maybe not to that extent, but I love bringing emotion out through as little notes as possible. I might have to do a piano solo and an epic orchestral, just for an added challenge, or like the guy below mentioned, I could have an epic orchestral with piano. Maybe a "Butterflies and Hurricanes" interlude type piano solo in the middle.

how bout a mix of A and C.................idk i'm just lookin for something different

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:04 AM WritersBlock responds:

An interesting suggestion, I'll seriously consider it, it should be a good challenge anyhow. Thanks.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:08 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

C if you can pull it off
or B or D
anything except A
here is an interesting fact
Pogonophobia- Fear of beards.
so does that mean that you are scared by people with beards or are you worried that a giant beard will jump through your window, set itself on fire and burn all your receipts for the financial year?

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:26 AM WritersBlock responds:

Anything except a? Why the hostility towards a? One of my favourite classical songs is a fast paced piano solo.
And I'd say Pogonophobia would be a fear of people with beards. ;D

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:09 AM PolishMatt says:

A. Lets hear some insane arpeggios and use of exotic scales with loads of modes and branching out over several octaves over a field of an insane chord progression. You should definitely add electric guitar, and if you do... make it complicated as well, none of that power chord and "heavy" bull shit, I'm talking sweeps with legato and tapping and some crazy ass tremolo picking with constant string skipping. Keep up the good work.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:36 AM WritersBlock responds:

While that would be cool, I'm not a very good guitarist, well, for fast passages of soloing and that sort of thing, but I definitely think that an epic piano orchestral is in order.
Thanks ;D

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:36 AM HolyPeanuts says:

A or B.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:53 AM WritersBlock responds:

Noted. =D

Sep. 19, 2008 | 12:38 AM Kevin says:

If you are looking for something more complicated and decorated. Search "Baroque" in google and you will most likely get some good classical type of music.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 1:00 AM WritersBlock responds:

I've studied baroque in a fair bit of depth in the past, I know what it is. While baroque has a technical and ornamental flair to it, I find it too similar, and bound by rules, that it lacks a certain emotion and vigour that you see in the romantic and contemporary eras, and to some extent in the classical era. I'm never short of a classical tune if I need to find one, as I've got several hundred classical songs in my iTunes library. Some Mozart, some Beethoven, some Chopin, Tchaikowsky, Gershwin, Strauss, even some Scott Joplin, Bach and Erik Satie. Thanks for the tip, but I'm looking into composing, rather than looking to listen. ;D

Sep. 19, 2008 | 3:49 AM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

A)

definitely A
something jaunty that makes you tap your feet
like the bohemian rhapsody

Sep. 19, 2008 | 4:29 AM WritersBlock responds:

Oh, how I would love to write something like bohemian rhapody one day. I could definitely try to make a rhapsody.

It appears A and C are pretty even now. Maybe I should do both.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 4:28 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

never trust a thing that comes first
also also if the piano is to be played I like the peacefullness of gentle ness in how it is played
how it is played sweetly, softly, it just flows and floats along the air

Sep. 19, 2008 | 4:43 AM WritersBlock responds:

Is that so?
Well have a listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5 CooOaRFkg&feature=related
And this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5 B6nysheec&feature=related
As much as I love the slower, more emotional pieces, the faster, more technically difficult pieces are awesome in a different way. I'll probably end up writing a song that has a bit of slow, soft music, and then build it up into a fast, intricate piece. A bit of A and a bit of B.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 6:03 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

ok I see your point
but I still wanna see you got up to a customer dressed as ganalf saying to them "YOU CANNOT PASS!"

Sep. 19, 2008 | 6:36 AM WritersBlock responds:

Okay, okay, I'll do it tomorrow. Jesus!

Sep. 19, 2008 | 6:32 AM The-Great-One says:

As a fan of the Classical music genre here on Newgrounds I would like to see the following. Keep in mind it could be quite challenging.

Start off at B then flow into A after that combine that with D then stop with A and come back to B and match it with C then end with B.

Or you can take the challenge I have given to another audio artist, only if you're interested.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 6:39 AM WritersBlock responds:

I should take the idea to maestro for a collab. I've got a promising beginning to a piano solo at the moment, very much B, but heading towards A. Who knows, I might integrate an ensemble or orchestra into the piece.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 8:38 AM Sialys says:

All four if you ask me.

The intro begins with the fast paced piano solo, not aggressive, but definitely standing out over whatever instruments you choose to throw behind it. And then it will lead into the B/D combination with an absolutely gorgeous piano and similar orchestral beauty backing it up, and to end the song you can combine the epic orchestral insanity with the aggressive side of piano playing.

So basically my order is, A, B/D, A/C

There's no point in picking just one! If you're in a classical mood, and you want to produce something. Produce something amazing!

:]]

I trust you can do this WritersBlock.
:D

Sep. 19, 2008 | 10:27 AM WritersBlock responds:

THE ORDER SHOULD BE AC/DC LOL.
But seriously, it's starting to look like a combo would be pretty good.
I've started on a melody that's sounding pretty sweet, although I think it'll turn out with a short B introduction, followed by A, which should cut away into B/D, then the piano would drop out for a short C. Then A would come back in to mix with C, and the song should end on a variation of B.
So, B, A, B/D, C, C/A, B.
Eh, it sounds like a tricky job, but I've got the introduction down, I think with proper planning, it might come through pretty good.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 9:30 AM Emancipation says:

A song like that shakes you up .

Sep. 19, 2008 | 10:30 AM WritersBlock responds:

Yes, yes it does. Sometimes I just feel like listening to some raw, energetic classical music.

Sep. 19, 2008 | 10:27 PM WritersBlock responds:

No luff 4 D :'(
D just sounds like a larger B, and the B sound is better off smaller.

A or C, they sound awesome :D

...

why do you never do rock and roll?

Sep. 19, 2008 | 10:32 PM WritersBlock responds:

Because I would suck at it.
I'll probably try my hand at punk/alt with synths and stuff in the future, because I used to write acoustic rock songs.
Here's the most rock-ish thing I've ever composed: http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Re view/4083.html

Sep. 21, 2008 | 8:01 AM ParagonOblivion says:

Oh let's see... Classical is a wonderfully complicated choice. So much to choose from, so much to play, you know?

Hmm.... I'm fond of those epic, sort of melancholic compositions, the ones that do more than move you emotionally, the kind that charge you with different feelings. You've heard something like it, I'm sure, so you might know what I'm trying to say here.

Didn't mean to get so wordy on you... xDD I can't help but blab on. I don't mean to be unoriginal, but several movements from the soundtrack to Escaflowne, particularly the larger battle sequences, have certain epic qualities, but they combine things. It's something like your options A and C, with the undertones of D.

But I'm a fan of epically complex subtle compositions. IF nothing else, I'd just trash all the opinions and do whatever my fingers lead me into.

Coincidentally, I'd like to know what you use to create these works of audial art. All I happen to own at the moment is an old keyboard, and that's not very useful by itself.

Sep. 21, 2008 | 10:05 AM WritersBlock responds:

Well, if you don't want to part with your cash, you can notate your music with finale notepad, and produce them in reaper. You can get a good classical soundfont to use with reaper called squidfont orchestral. I can send some links, if you'd like. There's also FL studio, which is a good, user friendly program that costs a bit, and the EW/QL Orchestral VSTi libraries to use in FL, which costs a lot. I use squidfont with FL, and sometimes reaper.

I'm trying out a new chiptune/tracker program, I think it'll be cool to mix that in with an orchestra once I figure out how it works...
