WritersBlock Recommends: Vol 1

Posted by WritersBlock - September 22nd, 2008

So, I've been thinking of starting a segment in the audio report where I pick out my favourite mainstream songs on youtube and explain why they're popular/awesome. But right now, I don't feel like it. But I still feel like sharing some of my favourite catchy tunes and awesome songs with you guys anyway. I like surfing youtube for songs I've heard on the radio, or songs from CDs I've just bought, or something along those lines.

This first song I heard a few times on the radio, and only just now bothered to look it up on youtube. It's catchy as all hell, and in it's fun atmosphere, it makes for an awesome listen. It's called "Dawn of the Dead" by a band called Does It Offend You, Yeah?

.
/* */
The Killers are a band that have had my interest for a little while now, I really like their catchy melodies and generally well structured songs. Mr. Brightside is one of my favourites off their Hot Fuss album from 2004. It was quite a success, but don't put it past yourself to give the song another listen.

.
/* */
Going back a bit further, to 2001, I've picked a song off the very first album I bought: Discovery, by Daft Punk. While I must admit, the first 4 songs kick ass, and I could stick Aerodynamic or Digital Love on repeat and never get bored, some of the other songs, such as Voyager and Verdis Quo, are well worth the listen. Most of the songs are catch at first, but then they grow on you, and now, one of my favourite songs on the album is Superheroes. I just love how it builds up. I especially love the classic synth arpeggios that are the climax of the song. The video is also one of the many brilliant scenes in "Interstella 5555", the musical to the Discovery album.

.
/* */
Now, go forward a bit in my life, to about 2003-05 ish, we'll get to a time in my life when I had become a fan of a band at the end of their career. Blink-182. Fun-loving, light pop-punk riffs, immature jokes. Catchy songs, nothing overly complicated, such was their lives before they faced the inevitable (yet inexplicably late) coming of their maturity. The year was 2000, the song was Man Overboard. The video was a parody of their previous videos, and stars 3 midgets. What more could you want?

.
/* */
A song that also came out in 2000, of which I first heard from the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (I still enjoy playing these games), an Australian punk band; Bodyjar. The song? Not The Same. These guys have some great energetic punk rock tunes, and Not The Same is no exception. Great vocals, energetic beat and a light catchy riff that makes this tune a win in my books.

.
/* */
Bohemian Like You, by The Dandy Warhols:

.
/* */
I don't need to say anything here, the video displays the txt quite nicely.

.
/* */
Now, two awesome songs for the price of one; Birds of Tokyo, with songs off their latest album Universes, "Broken Bones" and "Silhouettic". These guys are from Perth, and they're damn awesome.

.
/* */
And another Aussie band, The Living End, considered one of Australia's best live acts, Loaded Gun is one of my favs off their new album, White Noise. It's got a good story, too.

.
/* */
Still Waiting, by Sum 41. Now THAT'S fucking punk.

.
/* */
Orange Crush, by R.E.M, and you can watch pictures while you listen to the music, OMG!!!

.
/* */
Anthem for the Year 2000, by Silverchair.

.
/* */
And there you have it, a whole lot of awesome songs.
But wait, what's this? John Cage? Sonata V? Just watch, and please pick your jaw up off the floor when it's done. Makes thing's harder for the janitor to get 'round here.

.
/* */
Also: read this and you'll see that I fell miserably short, by about 22 levels. I had a good system!!! >:(

damn. Some of those videos gave me some really odd vibes. Sum41, that brought some early band memories... to think. I used to want to be the lead singer in a punk band. Glad I got a drum kit instead. So much fun.

What ever happened to silver chair btw? Are they still going at it?

Also, that john cage video was really amusing. John Cage was a sexy sexy man.

It apparently takes several hours to set all the screws and rubber bands and shit in the right place. I'd love to be the front man in a punk band. And Silverchair are still going strong. They released a new album last year, called "Young Modern". I've only heard "Straight Lines" off that album and it's pretty cool although I like some of the stuff off their greatest hits CD better. You know as soon as I posted this blog, I thought of a whole lot of other songs I could have put in here. Maybe some other time...

Not bad, some quality stuff there.
In respond to you and Quarl, I thought about leading a punk band myself, but now I think about Metal alot more.

Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of metal though. And I'm not at all a good enough guitarist to make decent metal. While metal requires a fair bit of instrumental skill, punk is more about the message behind the songs. You can just power chord over it all and it's all good :) but seriously, I think it'd be cool to create an electronic/DnB influenced punk band and call it "Reese's in Pieces", a perfect fusion of punk, electronica and candy.

My personal view on vocals is that it has a tendency to breed ignorance within the music community. In many instances, fans are far more pretentious about the bands they follow then the bands are themselves. On many occasion I hear statements such as "oh he's just the bassist" or "he's just the drummer" and statements like that really confuse me. To "lead" a band is a pretentious idea that neglects the importance of the remainder. Vocals can be beautiful; well written in both lyric and harmony, but some people take ideas too far.

I used to be one those people that took ideas too far. It wasn't until a few years after I started drumming I really began to appreciate the band as an entity, not as individual units. Being the vocalist in a band is a good thing. "Leading" the band is not. Augmenting your individuality is important but one person should never be the image of the band...

I just wish fans knew a little more. People don't realize what they like about music. While groups like Blink182, sum41 and even silverchair aren't that good in terms of what's possible compositionally, they're still a lot o fun to listen to. Sometimes people get fun and talent confused. They'll make the statement that "this band is really good" when I think what they mean to say is "I really enjoy this band."

Subjectivity :D

Yeah, I see what you mean about "leading" a band, but let's face it, a lot of bands work with one main songwriter, and I think it's up to the others in the band to prove themselves competent at pitching in their ideas and making contribution to the original idea. So, yes, you need to work well together, as a cohesive group, each should have a valuable contribution. At the moment, the music I make is very much my own, so it'll probably be a while before I find the right people with whom I can share my ideas with, without becoming the pretentious prick as the "leader" of "my" band. I guess it'll happen when it happens, and until that time, I'll probably look into performing solo. Maybe some acoustic stuff. I used to write a bunch of acoustic songs.

As for a band's compositional skills? While they're not Mozart reincarnates, the popular bands are good at making songs that are fun to listen to. Maybe that is what a good composition is. Maybe it's impossible to pass opinions on music as fact, or maybe the opinions of the masses become facts. But when you're at that international level, and recieving critical acclaim, you might just get away with saying "this band is really good". Maybe, I'm just putting the idea out there.

ah fuck I lost all the text I was writing to you
I am too buggered to write it out again

Oh damn. Maybe later, eh?

Right now I'm working on an epic cinematic orchestral piece. It's sounding pretty cool, but I'll have to spend a long time mixing the instruments right and stop them from sounding like shit. But still. Epic.

ok I feel better than yester
so here goes
them frenchies are good
one of my personal favourites is digital love aswell
sometihng about us, verdis quo and short circuit are also good ones from that album
fresh is a good song from their album homework I think same with funk ad
make love from album human after all has a good piano segment
LEN - steal my sunshine that was a classic song from the 90's
Bomfunk MC's brought in for the start of the millenium with Freestyler, B boys fly girls and super electric. They seem somewhat futuristic in their video clips and they taught me an area that I never knew of at the time - finland and theSkandanavian lands (I heard of abba before but always thought they were some form of american band)
and we have shortly lived Oasis with wonderwall and whatever
also there was Crazy Town with butterfly and just as shortly lived if not, shorter
Red Hot Chilli Peppers bringin in scar tissue, by the way, can't stop and the zephyr song
then we got wierd al yankovic
king of parodies
there is this british band that I have become interested in recently called The Coral
they brought Jaqueline, dreaming of you, pass it on, goodbye, who's gonna find me and skeleton key to the ears of many
before all this lot came in Roy Orbison with working for the man and Creedence Clearwater Revival with green river, fortunate son, run through the jungle and someday never comes
umm.... that is all I can remember from yesterday and a couple of extra things

Yeah Daft Punk have done some awesome stuff.
I'm unfamiliar with the music of The Choral, Roy Orbison and Creedence Clearwater Revival, but pretty much everything else I remember watching on Rage ages ago or listening to on CDs. I actually thought about a couple of the songs you mentioned to put in this blog. I think it's a bit odd you're saying that Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers are "short lived" bands especially since they've both been around since the early 1990's and and in the case of RHCP early-mid 1980's.

I've also got many others I could add to my list when I feel like making another "WB Recommends" blog. =P

oh!
Eels!
they are good
sound of fear, flower in a hailstorm, it is a beautiful day, saturday morning
I knew I was forgetting something

I was saying that crazy town was
my poor spelling and punctuation is bad

Ok, but it was clear you were saying Oasis were short lived too.
Maybe you should start your own "Wolfblitz recommends:" blog, and credit me with the idea (well, I actually got this idea from zekeyspaceylizard's animations blogs, and I thought "that's a shitload of cool animations, I should do that sort of thing with music")

Also, part 1 of my short story should be in my blog soon. Got 2, 000 words done, and over 10, 000 characters done. I'm not sure if I should just fill out the 30, 000 char limit or just section it up as appropriate, because right now would be a good time to close the first part, as it all pretty much takes place in the one area.
Yeah, I'll do that, I'll just cap off the end of the part and submit it in a min. You have to read it. It's not brutal at all, yet, but it's going to grow into a psychopathic beast of horror and torment. :)

ok
I see that Oasis is still around after all
I thought it ended long ago
and appearentally they started in 91 so that is news to me
I don't think I could do my version it would be
this is good, this is good, buy this, this is good, this is good, buy this, this is good, TELLIE TUBBIES ARE EVIL!

I didn't really do anything too special. I just picked songs that I liked and songs that meant stuff to me. Pretty easy, really.
And telly tubbies are not as evil as dora the explora!
