WritersBlock

About 80% complete.

Posted by WritersBlock Jul. 13, 2009 @ 4:49 AM EDT

My album is probably about 80% complete. It's currently at 51 minutes and 20 seconds and I've only got 2 tracks to finish composing before I go looking for vocal talent. Once that's been recorded, I'll put it into the songs and then go through them again, touching up things here and there, getting rid of flaws and making them on the whole better to listen to. It's been a while since I've posted an update on my album, so I'll recap everything:
Title: Sidechained Melody
Tracks: 11
1) The Old Man And The Sea (2:55)
2) Lighthouse Song (8:08)
3) Amber Reflections (5:19)
4) Moon Bears From Outer Space (3:34)
5) Crawl_Space (4:38)
6) Empathy (5:37)
7) Down The Rabbit Hole (7:06)
8) Barricade (4:01)
9) Refraction WIP (2:37)
10) Particle Surfer (4:46)
11) Rhapsody In Melancholia WIP (2:44)

Artwork (pending) by Lochie (aka Night-Mare)
Vocal work (pending) by ???
Might even decide to ditch the idea to have a voice actor on the album.
I'll probably post a demo of the album to Newgrounds (kind of like what went on here) so you can give it a listen here before you wander over to iTunes to buy it. ^_^

Not long now, I'd hope it'll be in the online stores somewhere within the next 2-3 months.

[EDIT] Finished Rhapsody in Melancholia. I decided to have two distinct parts to it (pretty much two different songs), one I wrote over the past few days, which has been a song I've been thinking about/trying to write over the last week or so ("Introvert") and the second half is a classical soundtrack to a short movie I worked on in my fist semester of Uni some months ago. I thought the song could hold its own as a closing piece to the album. So the album's now at 54:13 and I've just got to finish composing Refraction and I'll be onto the home stretch. I've been working on this since February, and I've got to say, it feels fantastic to be this close to completion.

Moon Bears From Outer Space is my favourite title. ;D

Someday I'll have to sit down and review all your audio.

*Someday*

Jul. 13, 2009 | 11:13 PM WritersBlock responds:

That would be a good day, but I imagine a tedious day for yourself. I've got a lot of old submissions that I'd consider to be of a lower standard than that of which I aim for today.

I sense good music...

oh I wish I was good at singing...

Jul. 13, 2009 | 11:31 PM WritersBlock responds:

Eh, the more I think about it, the more I feel that I could do without it. At one point I cut up a sample from a movie and played it in one of my songs, it was cool, but I felt it didn't quite hit the mark. We'll see how the songs finish up.

Yeah, I don't think I got around to online shopping until earlier this year. But to each, 6their own, I guess.

Whoa, were you demodded?

Jul. 28, 2009 | 8:15 AM Piss says:

I haven't listened to any of them so far. Are they lyrical?

Jul. 28, 2009 | 9:00 AM WritersBlock responds:

Not in the slightest. Although at one point I planned on adding lyrics of some sort. Maybe when I'm done with this I'll try my hand at some vocal stuff. I dunno.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 12:44 AM Piss says:

I suppose our projects are quite opposite, then, lol. My songs are more focused on the lyrics and the instrumentals are quite weak.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 12:57 AM WritersBlock responds:

Oh? I didn't know you were into music. For me, personally, I don't place performance and skill high on my priorities, rather building a song that is thoughtful and enjoyable. You could be the best guitarist in the world, but if you don't know how to construct a song, it's just mindless soloing (what comes to mind with Dragonforce). When I can learn to integrate lyrics into a song well, I'll utilise them more often.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 1:32 AM Piss says:

I'm very interested in music. I have a few submissions but those are only rough drafts done on an ancient chord organ I found. I'm also planning on releasing something soon, as explained in my blog post.

Since I have no skill in editing and can't separately record instrumentals then multi track vocals well (bad sense of timing), I'm just going to have to practice.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 1:39 AM WritersBlock responds:

Have you tried investing in a decent digital workstation? I'm doing everything on my album through FL studio, which should suffice for recording directly into and separating and organising tracks therein. There are plenty of other programs out there, but I'm not exactly sure what's best for live recording, as I do hardly any of that myself. I'll have a closer look at your stuff and your blog a bit later and let you know what I think.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 2:00 AM Piss says:

Well I know a few people with actual proffessional recording equipment, including a high-school. But for now a digital audio recorder will suffice. Professionalism isn't so important to me for now.

Jul. 30, 2009 | 3:28 AM WritersBlock responds:

Ok, cool. I know my equipment is generally considered a bit sub-par as far as the professional music world goes, but I figure that I'll have time to upgrade later.
