Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of metal though. And I'm not at all a good enough guitarist to make decent metal. While metal requires a fair bit of instrumental skill, punk is more about the message behind the songs. You can just power chord over it all and it's all good :) but seriously, I think it'd be cool to create an electronic/DnB influenced punk band and call it "Reese's in Pieces", a perfect fusion of punk, electronica and candy.
My personal view on vocals is that it has a tendency to breed ignorance within the music community. In many instances, fans are far more pretentious about the bands they follow then the bands are themselves. On many occasion I hear statements such as "oh he's just the bassist" or "he's just the drummer" and statements like that really confuse me. To "lead" a band is a pretentious idea that neglects the importance of the remainder. Vocals can be beautiful; well written in both lyric and harmony, but some people take ideas too far.
I used to be one those people that took ideas too far. It wasn't until a few years after I started drumming I really began to appreciate the band as an entity, not as individual units. Being the vocalist in a band is a good thing. "Leading" the band is not. Augmenting your individuality is important but one person should never be the image of the band...
I just wish fans knew a little more. People don't realize what they like about music. While groups like Blink182, sum41 and even silverchair aren't that good in terms of what's possible compositionally, they're still a lot o fun to listen to. Sometimes people get fun and talent confused. They'll make the statement that "this band is really good" when I think what they mean to say is "I really enjoy this band."

Yeah, I see what you mean about "leading" a band, but let's face it, a lot of bands work with one main songwriter, and I think it's up to the others in the band to prove themselves competent at pitching in their ideas and making contribution to the original idea. So, yes, you need to work well together, as a cohesive group, each should have a valuable contribution. At the moment, the music I make is very much my own, so it'll probably be a while before I find the right people with whom I can share my ideas with, without becoming the pretentious prick as the "leader" of "my" band. I guess it'll happen when it happens, and until that time, I'll probably look into performing solo. Maybe some acoustic stuff. I used to write a bunch of acoustic songs.
As for a band's compositional skills? While they're not Mozart reincarnates, the popular bands are good at making songs that are fun to listen to. Maybe that is what a good composition is. Maybe it's impossible to pass opinions on music as fact, or maybe the opinions of the masses become facts. But when you're at that international level, and recieving critical acclaim, you might just get away with saying "this band is really good". Maybe, I'm just putting the idea out there.

They seem somewhat futuristic in their video clips and they taught me an area that I never knew of at the time - finland and theSkandanavian lands (I heard of abba before but always thought they were some form of american band)

before all this lot came in Roy Orbison with working for the man and Creedence Clearwater Revival with green river, fortunate son, run through the jungle and someday never comes

I'm unfamiliar with the music of The Choral, Roy Orbison and Creedence Clearwater Revival, but pretty much everything else I remember watching on Rage ages ago or listening to on CDs. I actually thought about a couple of the songs you mentioned to put in this blog. I think it's a bit odd you're saying that Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers are "short lived" bands especially since they've both been around since the early 1990's and and in the case of RHCP early-mid 1980's.
I've also got many others I could add to my list when I feel like making another "WB Recommends" blog. =P

Maybe you should start your own "Wolfblitz recommends:" blog, and credit me with the idea (well, I actually got this idea from zekeyspaceylizard's animations blogs, and I thought "that's a shitload of cool animations, I should do that sort of thing with music")
Also, part 1 of my short story should be in my blog soon. Got 2, 000 words done, and over 10, 000 characters done. I'm not sure if I should just fill out the 30, 000 char limit or just section it up as appropriate, because right now would be a good time to close the first part, as it all pretty much takes place in the one area.
Yeah, I'll do that, I'll just cap off the end of the part and submit it in a min. You have to read it. It's not brutal at all, yet, but it's going to grow into a psychopathic beast of horror and torment. :)

damn. Some of those videos gave me some really odd vibes. Sum41, that brought some early band memories... to think. I used to want to be the lead singer in a punk band. Glad I got a drum kit instead. So much fun.
What ever happened to silver chair btw? Are they still going at it?

It apparently takes several hours to set all the screws and rubber bands and shit in the right place. I'd love to be the front man in a punk band. And Silverchair are still going strong. They released a new album last year, called "Young Modern". I've only heard "Straight Lines" off that album and it's pretty cool although I like some of the stuff off their greatest hits CD better. You know as soon as I posted this blog, I thought of a whole lot of other songs I could have put in here. Maybe some other time...
